The Volkswagen Golf has been named Used Car of the Year by What Car? magazine, Britain’s biggest car buyer’s guide.  The 2010 Golf SE 1.4-litre TSI five-door model claimed victory in the Family Car class ‘over £6,000’ category, before going on to win the overall Car of the Year accolade.  The Golf is no stranger to What Car? Used Car awards, having also won its class last year.

The What Car? Used Car of the Year judging panel was made up of experts from all areas of the motor industry including car dealerships, auction houses and What Car?magazine itself.

In commenting on the reasons for the Golf’s win, John McIlroy, Editor of What Car?said: ‘The What Car? used car of the year and family car winner, the Volkswagen Golf has consistently proved that you don’t have to buy big to get impressive cabin quality and refinement.  Volkswagen has got it right with the Golf, each generation of Golf gets better and better making it such a great used car buy.’

The Golf Mk VI is praised for offering buyers ‘genuine value for money’, thanks to an impressive and economical engine, a spacious and stylish cabin with an ‘exceptionally high quality look and feel’ and strong safety credentials.  In short, says What Car?: ‘No other small family car matches the Golf for fun and comfort.’

Collecting the award on behalf of Volkswagen was Head of Sales Operations, Ian Plummer, who said: ‘We’re delighted to win this award.  The seventh-generation Golf has claimed a number of high profile accolades since its launch so it’s tremendous for us that the previous generation is also still winning titles too.  Excellent value for money, high quality and a strong reputation mean the Golf is always a popular choice with new and used car buyers and we’re grateful that What Car? has recognised this.’

Volkswagen’s used car programme, called ‘Das WeltAuto’, ensures that customers not only get a quality product, but also high quality service when they purchase a car from a Retailer.  Rolled out across the manufacturer’s network in 2011, Das WeltAuto is designed to make the purchase of a secondhand car as appealing as that of a new car, with ‘Used cars you can trust. Guaranteed’.

Every car sold under the Das WeltAuto banner comes with a number of features, including a no quibble exchange policy, free servicing for two years when bought with Volkswagen Finance and a used car warranty.  Full details, as well as an online used car locator, can be found at  www.volkswagen.co.uk/used.

The full results of What Car?’s Used Car of the Year awards are published in the November issue of the magazine, out 19 September.

Automatic transmission takes the hard work out of driving, especially when you're crawling along in heavy traffic or on long motorway hauls.

Automatic transmissions make driving easier by taking over the decision of when to change gear and leaving you to concentrate on the traffic and road conditions.

The automatic transmission automatically adapts to your driving style at any given time - from leisurely cruising to sporty performance - and also takes the road conditions into account. It not only reduces strain on the engine and transmission in stop-start traffic, but also reduces stress on the driver.

Built-in safety

The 'keylock' and 'shiftlock' functions of the automatic transmission provide extra safety. 'Keylock' stops the ignition key from being removed unless the gear selector lever is in the Park (P) position. After the engine is started, the selector lever can only be moved out of positions P or N (Neutral) when the driver presses the brake pedal (shiftlock). This prevents the danger of any unintended movement of the car when the engine is started.

The e-Golf, which is being presented in a world premiere in Frankfurt, is driven by an 85 kW / 115 PS electric motor. The motor produces its maximum drive torque of 270 Nm as soon as it starts off. The results: the front-wheel drive e-Golf reaches 100 km/h in 10.4 seconds. On a motorway, the speed of the five-seat front-wheel drive car is electronically limited to 140 km/h.

Volkswagen has released the first details of its powerful new Volkswagen Golf R, which is set to take to the stage at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month.  With a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 300 PS and 280 lbs ft, and transferring its power to the road via the latest 4MOTION four-wheel drive system, the new Golf R is the fastest-accelerating production Golf yet, with a zero to 62 mph time of just 5.3 seconds (compared with 5.7 seconds for the previous model), or 4.9 seconds when fitted with the optional six-speed DSG gearbox.  Top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph.

The new Golf R isn’t just faster, either: with combined fuel consumption of 39.8 mpg* (40.9 mpg* for the DSG version), and CO2 emissions as low as 159 g/km it is up to 18 per cent more efficient than its predecessor.

At the heart of the R is a newly developed version of the EA888 TSI engine used in the latest Golf GTI, but in this application producing 300 PS.  Compared with the GTI’s powerplant, the Golf R’s engine has a modified cylinder head, exhaust valves, valve seats and springs, pistons, injection valves and turbocharger.

The Golf R’s four-wheel drive is the latest fifth-generation Haldex system.  Under low loads or when coasting, the rear axle is decoupled, helping to reduce fuel consumption.  It takes only fractions of a second for drive to the rear axle to be engaged via the Haldex coupling, which is actuated by an electro-hydraulic pump.  If necessary, almost 100 per cent of power can be transferred to the rear axle.

The Golf R rides on specially tuned springs and dampers, with a ride height that’s 20 mm lower than that of the standard Golf (and 5 mm lower than that of the GTI).  Adaptive Chassis Control will be available as an option.  Like the GTI and GTD, the Golf R is equipped with progressive steering, which reduces the number of turns lock to lock to just 2.1, rather than 2.75, making for an enhanced dynamic driving experience.

Visually, the Golf R is distinguished by its new front bumper design, with large air inlets, modified radiator grille with ‘R’ logo and newly developed daytime running lights that are integrated into the standard bi-xenon headlights.  At the side, there are bespoke body-colour sills, while behind the standard 18-inch alloy wheels with 225/40 tyres are black-painted brake calipers with ‘R’ logos.  The brakes themselves are all ventilated discs: 30 mm by 640 mm at the front and 22 mm by 310 mm at the rear.  At the rear, there are smoked LED tail lights, an ‘R’ diffuser and four chrome-tipped exhaust pipes – two at either side.

The interior features sports seats with a cloth centre section and Alcantara bolsters, while the instrument dials are bespoke for the R, and include typical touches such as blue needles.

(* UK fuel consumption figures will be finalised closer to launch)
